2012 Texas GOP Convention

National Convention

UPDATE 12:00am, June 1st: The deadline for submitting an application for consideration to RPT Staff has expired - you may still seek to become a national delegate or alternate by appearing in person in front of the National Nominations Committee for an at-large slot, or by being elected within your Congressional District Caucus.

You may still fill out the Application for Consideration for use in seeking an at-large slot, but DO NOT MAIL OR FAX IT TO RPT - IT WILL NOT BE RECEIVED OR SUBMITTED TO THE COMMITTEE. Instead, make 40 copies of the application and bring your forms to the National Nominations Committee at the State Convention, which will meet Friday evening.

The 2012 Republican National Convention will be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum from August 27-30, 2012, and will host 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternate delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories. The convention will also include approximately 15,000 credentialed media — an international press corps second only in size to this summer's London Olympic Games — as well as a global audience that will witness a "convention without walls" thanks to our Internet and social media efforts.

Interested in Being a National Delegate?

Texas delegates to the Republican National Convention are chosen in two ways:

  1. By Congressional District Caucus

  2. At-Large by the National Nominations Committee

All delegates chosen will serve in the same capacity at the Republican National Convention (ie. there is no difference between congressional district delegates and at-large delegates, other than the way they are selected.)

How do become nominated as a Delegate from my Congressional District?

Three delegates and three alternates will be chosen from each of the 36 Congressional Districts in Texas to represent our state at the Republican National Convention. Congressional District Caucuses will meet on Friday, June 8th at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 9th at 8:00 a.m. Room numbers will be announced in the official convention program. Please see RPT Rule 38 for nominating procedures.

How do become nominated as an At-Large Delegate?

44 delegates and 44 alternates will be chosen “at-large” to represent Texas at the Republican National Convention. You are (if you wish) able to testify in front of the National Nominations Committee at the State Convention on Friday, June 8th at 7:30 p.m. or Saturday, June 9th at 10:00 a.m. Room numbers will be announced in the official convention program. Please see RPT Rule 38 for nominating procedures. It is recommended that you bring 40 completed copies of the Application for Consideration, linked at the top of this page.

** While it is not necessary to bring the Application for Consideration, it is a good way for the committee to gain information about applicants in order to make an educated decision.  The only material that will be distributed to the National Nominations Committee by RPT is a compilation of the Application for Considerations that were sent to RPT by the May 31st deadline.  If you would like to distribute additional material, please bring at least 40 copies to the committee meeting during the times mentioned above.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL PERSONS SEEKING A DELEGATE OR ALTERNATE POSITION AT THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

Consider these before making this commitment!

A MANDATORY MEETING will be held for Delegates and Alternates after adjournment of the State Convention in the General Assembly Theater on the 3rd Floor of the Fort Worth Convention Center. All elected National Delegates and Alternates must attend.

Items you must provide at this meeting:

HOUSING RESERVATIONS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED AT THE MANDATORY DELEGATE AND ALTERNATE MEETING.  There is a 5-night minimum for hotel reservations.  Delegates and Alternates are responsible for all hotel costs, which could be approximately $1500. Consider choosing a roommate to share the cost and space.  Reservations for Delegates and Alternates at the host hotel can only be made through RPT.  Note: Delegates and Alternates are also responsible for all other travel expenses, meals, etc. Your total expense will likely exceed $2000 per person.

Contact Information – you must be available to receive information

Over the summer, email will be the primary source of communication between Delegates/Alternates and the RPT Delegation Coordinator.  During the National Convention (other than daily briefing meetings with handouts), text messaging on cell phones will be the primary source of communication between Delegates and Alternates and the RPT Delegation Coordinator.

Photo ID – this is required for participation at the National Convention

All participants to the Republican National Convention will be required to carry government-issued photo IDs at all times during the convention.  Please bring this with you to the mandatory delegate and alternate meeting as well.
